Online learning

Please note that due to the current developments regarding COVID-19 (Corona Virus) in Italy and the difficult situation that we are all facing during this emergency, all the activities and lessons of the Venice Summer School 2020 will be transferred online. As such, we encourage all people willing to apply to do so. All accepted candidates will be contacted by e-mail regarding the teaching methods used and will be informed on how to participate in the conference.

Thank you for your understanding.

The Summer School “Communities and the Individual: Beyond the Liberal-Communitarian Divide” is organized by the Department of Asian and North African Studies at the University of Ca’ Foscari in collaboration with Reset Dialogues on Civilizations.

The School will investigate in-depth the ways in which communities are constructed and examine the role of language and alterity play in their shaping. By looking closely at sub-national identities and linguistic, ethnic, and religious minorities in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and the Middle East, it will focus in particular on how modern nation-states engage with issues of difference and integration.

Students will consider and write about how current tendencies towards populism put at risk religious identities, pluralism, and minority rights. They will actively participate in intercultural understanding and communication through workshops with international practitioners and civil society stakeholders. They will work in small teams under the supervision of professional instructors and will be tasked with turning their research essays into a publishable piece of writing for the general public.

  1. The Social Construction of Communities
  2. Language, Culture and Communities
