Europe at a Crossroads After the Shock

How will it feel to reemerge from an endless-seeming sleep to discover that there is still a whole world out there? This is roughly the feeling with which not only individuals, but all of Europe is looking to welcome 2021, burying a disastrous year. The health and socio-economic shock of the pandemics, and on a political level, the four-year nightmare of a less than EU-friendly US presidency.

What kind of European Union will reemerge from this hibernation? Will the launch of the Next Generation EU program be the building block of a new federal leap or it will remain an isolated, emergency experience? And how should relations with the US and China be redesigned?

These are the questions tackled in this e-book, the fruit of a conference organized between Reset DOC and Fondazione Corriere della Sera last fall, by some of the most important scholars and observers of European and international affairs: Marta Dassù, Sergio Fabbrini, Timothy Garton Ash, Bernard Guetta, Shada Islam, André Sapir, Alberto Saravalle, Vivien Schmidt.

Their analyses and practical proposals are enriched by interviews with two key players in this crucial transition, in Rome and Brussels – European Commissioner for the Economy Paolo Gentiloni, in dialogue with Federico Fubini, and Italy’s Minister for European Affairs Enzo Amendola, interviewed by Francesca Basso, – and by a conversation with former Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato on the legacy of the late Valery Giscard d’Estaing.

A strategic immersion useful, to all of us, to frame the Union, and the world in which we would like to live tomorrow.
