    He didn’t doubt his faith, but he doubted his country, which he loved as perhaps only someone can who began with the village Koran school, visited college-prep high school in a provincial city, moved to the capital to support his siblings as their older brother, and managed to become a professor at the venerable Cairo University, someone who knew his country from top to bottom and always regarded himself as its servant.
