Recent policies in Europe reveal a troubling trend: in liberal states, which, ironically, in order to protect liberalism, violate the very same values they seek to protect. European states expect migrants to think alike, behave alike, and arrive at similar conclusions about the good life. This reality creates a paradox.
Liberal states, in order to defend what they perceive as a liberal regime, resort to illiberal means, says Liav Orgad from European University Institute. But is there a way by taking into account human rights of migrants and minority communities and the cultural interest of majority groups?
